The Amboy Crater in Amboy, California is one that not many people think to go and see. This is mainly due to the fact that the entire town of Amboy, from its gas station to its airport, is deserted. The crater is actually a giant volcano that just sits in the desert, but it is extinct and is said to be made of mostly lava. There is another crater nearby, but it is not as well preserved as Amboy Crater. The volcano sits at over 250 feet high and is classified as a “volcanic cinder cone”. This is a great spot to explore once you leave Amboy, because then it will be later in the day and hopefully 1 or 2 degrees cooler. Be warned, there is no shade walking out to it, and not much nearby.
