Many towns along Route 66 contain museums that are dedicated to mining, and this is because of how important it was to the area at that time. The Illinois Route 66 Mining Museum is full of stories of the men who worked in these mines, along with fossils and minerals that were found on the mines. Located in Godley, Illinois, it is one of the larger attractions to see in town. This town is also the site of the Diamond Mine Disaster, and there is a place that recognizes the loss of all those men and women. While you are there, you will learn how some of the bodies are still trapped inside, and were never recovered.
