In Montgomery County, Illinois, is the protection of all travelers on route 66. There stands the shrine of Our Lady of the Highways. This shrine of Mother Mary has been on the side of the road since the 50s, and it stands a reminder to travelers that they are safe. This statue was originally a high school project in Italy, but has since traveled a long way to protect people who travel along the road. This is a stop almost every route 66 traveler makes, and takes a minute just to spend observing the statue. Below Mother Mary is a plaque that explains the history of Mary.
